ARTIST STATEMENT:

My paintings reflect sources of inspiration related to my past and present experiences, and the seemingly simple objects of everyday life.  Many of these objects bring forth personal memories, often familial. The objects are used symbolically to communicate psychological and spiritual concepts. For instance, the painting, “North Point Memories” goes back to the place of my childhood in San Francisco. It was created after my father’s death, in a moment when those fond memories were flowing into my consciousness.
I view the titles of my work as an important and integral component for understanding the concept. Often the titles precede the making of the paintings or they become clear to me during the painting process and further illuminate the meaning of the piece. The title for “Mourning Bride” came to me synchronistically. The fedora was worn as a wedding hat by the now deceased father of my partner, Vince. While shopping for old seed packets for another painting, I found a seed packet with a picture of a flower named Mourning Bride. It became clear that this was the object I needed to place next to the fedora and it would also be the title for the painting.
